News from North Queensland

- Radio Swotting today
As the news goes to air today some Radio Amateurs from Rockhampton, Townsville
and Cairns are entering their final day of swotting and assessment with Fred Swainston
VK3DAC cracking the whip for the WIA Public Safety Communications Course being
held at the TARC Club Rooms.
Participants have been hard at it since Friday evening with the on campus part of the
training along with many hours of homework over the last month. The light is at the end
of the tunnel, with the course finishing around 4pm today.
This training session is one of several the WIA has held around the country to prepare
trainers and operators to be nationally compliant with the requirements of public safety
organisations. Participants in the Townsville course are very appreciative of the time
Fred Swainston VK3DAC has put into developing the course and taking the trouble
to jet north of the Brisbane Line to give the training in a region that experiences
natural disasters every year.

- Nighthawk Comms Support Report
The inaugural Kennedy Region Scouts Operation Nighthawk activity was held
in the Kelso area from 4pm Saturday 24th to 4-30am Sunday 25th July with
communications support planned and supported by members of The Townsville
Amateur Radio Club Inc. Around 80 Scouts and 20 Venturers successfully navigated
their way about a 20km course in the dark successfully finding a number of activity
bases and completing tasks that eventually earned them a swag of badges and
the special 2010 NQ Nighthawk patch.
Communications took place primarily on 147.150MHz simplex and on UHF CB CH26
between bases manned by Radio Amateurs and Scout Leaders.
HQ was run by Richard VK4FRJG, Mapping Base by Lyndall VK4ZM, Milo Base by
Chris VK4FR, Quiz Base by Gavin VK4ZZ and Observation Base by Joan VK4FTVL
and Colin VK4UCM. The three remaining bases were run solely by Scout Leaders
as not enough Radio Amateurs had volunteered to help with the event. Nevertheless
Nighthawk organiser Glenn Platypus Ricks thanked those hams who took part noting
that the event would not have been able to be run without Radio Amateur help and presented
operators with Nighthawk patches, Scouting pens, Scouting notepads and a 2 for 1 Mac attack
voucher. There will definitely be a Nighthawk in 2011 and Amateur Radio will have a big
involvement.

- King of the Hill Comms Support Report
The hills were alive to the sound of burning rubber, highly tuned performance engines
and efficient amateur radio time control communications on Sunday 25th July with
the running of the third heat of the Townsville City Autosports Club King of the Hill
Hillclimb on the Mount Stuart Road.
Radio Amateurs provided time control communications between Flying Finish and Start,
timing equipment and safety radio operators at Flying Finish and backup safety communications
at Start.
Hams lapping it up in the mountains at Flying Finish were Phil VK4HSV who also supplied
the main point vehicle and only 3 acres of canvas mansion this time, Snow VK4IFS and
Chris VK4FR. Operators at the Start were Blue VK4FBLU who also supplied the main
point vehicle and shade, Lyndall VK4ZM, Tom VK4KS, Gavin VK4ZZ and training for the
first time Mark Maddy and Braedon Mitchell.
20 competitors completed 7 runs up the hill, the timing gear went without a hitch and
there were only a couple of minor scrapes between car and armcove. Operators were
fed well with free Autoburgers at lunchtime and competition completed at 3-30pm.
Communications for Time Control were on 147.150MHz with secondary frequency
438.800MHz and safety and officials comms were conducted on UHF CB CH12.
Event Organiser Kerry Cobbing thanked the Radio Amateurs for yet again being
a vital piece of running the hillclimb and hinted that he would very much like to
see them back for the October 3 event.

- North Queensland Net VK100WIA Report
The Townsville Amateur Radio Club, as part of its 3 day block provided by the WIA,
utilised VK100WIA during the running of the Sunday July 25th evening North Queensland
Net on 3605.4kHz along with relay and callbacks on 146.7MHZ.
38 stations called in on 80metres with most staying on for the second round of the net
run by Gavin VK4ZZ while 10 operators called in on 2metres with most staying on for
the second round of the net run by Richard VK4FRJG.
Propagation was good on 80metres with stations worked in VK3, VK6, VK2 and VK4 call
areas.

- Ann Renton Memorial Ladies Net VK100WIA Report
It was time to focus on the YLs with VK100WIA during the Townsville Amateur Radio Club Inc
activation of the WIA 100th Birthday special call during the Ann Renton Memorial Ladies Net
on Tuesday evening 27th July.
A special linking operation enabled the net, which usually only runs on the Townsville
2metre repeater, to also run on the Townsville 70cm repeater, link via IRLP to the Rockhampton
VHF Repeater and also link in 3605.4kHz with net control by Lyndall VK4ZM in Vincent
and all the behind the scenes interlinking done by Gavin VK4ZZ at the TARC Club Rooms
at West End.
The net was blessed with the attendance of YLs Evie VK4EQ and Denise VK4FCDB
in Townsville and Mary VK4PZ and Meryll VK4HAJ in Rockhampton. Alas no contacts were
made on 80metres, however Jeff VK4NJB in Rockhampton and 5 OMs in Townsville were also
able to join in the special edition of the net and share in the warm glow of the VK100WIA
callsign.

- TARC Management Meeting this Tuesday at a special spot
The Management Meeting of the Townsville Amateur Radio Club
Inc happens this Tuesday 3rd of August at a special place.
Roll up by 7-15pm at the West End Hotel, corner Ingham Road and Jane Street
for a 7-30pm start of the meeting.
Make sure you bring along something for the Show and Tell session.

- TARC Lighthouse Weekend getting popular
theTARCinc 2010 Cape Cleveland Lighthouse DX-Pediton
for the International Lighthouse Lightship Weekend
Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd August 2010
VK4WIT    AU0045     QH30MT
This event is always a great weekend full of relaxed operating,
the challenge of deploying HF VHF and UHF antennae in a remote
environment and talking to stations at other lighthouses around
Australia and the world.

The DX-pedition travels to and from the site via the mighty barge Hercules.
Costs for sea travel and gear cartage only $60 per person return.
The trip over takes a little over an hour.
The Hercules has plenty of cargo space but it can get wet.
Theres then a walk up a rather steep road to the lighthouse,
however most of the gear can be shipped up from the beach via trayback utility.
Those that might wobble on the walk up can get a lift with the utility.

Departure will be 7:00am Saturday morning from the seaward
Coast Guard ramp off Sir Leslie Thiess Drive.

Parking is not available at the boat ramp so a drop off would be best.
If you need to park it would be best back up at the Townsville Enterprise
building or in the Casino carparks.

Essentials to bring :
Sleeping bag or Swag.  Comfy chair.  Sun protection (sunscreen, big sunhat etc.)
Jacket or windcheater. Boots.
Lunch for Saturday, Breakfast for Sunday.   Bring some fresh water, Drinks, Small Esky

BBQ meat &/or vegies for Saturday dinner, Nibbles for happy hours and on the way home.
The ladies are bringing their tea candle powered chocolate fondue,
if you are nice they will share !
Binoculars, Telescopes, Cameras and things.
Fishing gear if you want to dangle a line and catch us some dinner.

Available on site
BBQ and firewood, Sheds for sleep and shelter.  Solar Powered freezer.
About 6 beds available.   Some need to bring a camp stretcher.

Relaxed Timetable
Saturday
Set up - antennae, batteries and radios should be ready around 1000 - 1100
During the morning and afternoon - try to spot Migaloo and other fantastic aquatic life

Sunday
For those that slept all night radios again.
For those who made contacts all night get a few hours sleep.
0830 - Break camp and pull down ready for 1000 departure at the beach.

Radios, Equipment and Operations
The site can support a maximum of 2 HF transceivers operating at the same time.
One HF transceiver will sport a 20x20x20m Delta Loop with 160m to 10m capability.
There will also be operations on 6metres/VHF/UHF DX with Bazz-s portable
Log Periodic antenna.
Equipment will be battery powered and solar charged.
Operators on site will also be monitoring IRLP Node 6444
and other frequencies on handhelds.
