News of a Silent Key
- Robert Jon Pavan VK4FUE
Sad news into the news desk of the passing of Rob Pavan/VK4FUE,
a former TARCadian and resident of the Burdekin. Rob lost his life
on Saturday April 18th when the Jabiru aircraft he was piloting crashed
in mountainous terrain near the town of Woolooga, approx 39 km northwest
of Gympie QLD.
Rob was a very experienced pilot and had recently completed a flight trip around
Australia. He had taken off from Gympie for a destination near Gladstone for a
friends birthday party, however his status was set to overdue by mid afternoon
Saturday and a search was conducted along his planned flight path. Wreckage of his plane
was found on Monday afternoon April 20th.
North Queensland Hams will remember fondly Rob's operations 'tractor mobile' during
the 1990s while he was doing jobs about the cane paddocks of the Burdekin.
It is certain that the Radioamateur community is saddened by Rob's passing and
pass on sincere condolences to Rob's family and relatives.
AVE Robert Jon Pavan VK4FUE, Silent Key.

out for the Telsiz Radyo Amatorleri Cemiyeti ANZAC/Dardenelles centenary
station TA3EC operating on Echolink right near the commemoration site.

Watch out for all the TC100 commemorative stations in Turkey -
operating H24 from 22nd to 26th April

- AM and CW on ANZAC 100 - Radioamateurs Remember.
The traditional AM & CW event organised by Mike "Banjo" Patterson VK4MIK
and  the Tablelands Radio Group of Far North Queensland, will again
take to the air for the 5th year. This is not a contest.
It honours those modes used by service personnel in earlier wars. The event
idea came from a telephone conversation between Mike "Banjo" Patterson VK4MIK
and World War 11 Coastwatcher in Papua New Guinea, Lionel Veale.
He set up his ATR4A HF radio and orientated the antenna from behind enemy
lines. Lionel was one of those brave Coastwatchers who sent back vital information.
The concept developed by the Tableland Radio Group in Far North Queensland
basically asks us to consider changing modes on ANZAC Day nets, as an honour
and Amateur Radio salute to those who served or are serving.

The annual event involves ex-military sites and related museums. It includes
the AM Narly Net on 3.600 MHz at 0630 local and then the same mode appears
at 7.115 MHz during the afternoon in Northern Queensland.

Ex HMAS Diamintina will be operating as VK4RAN on the afternoon on CW on
7.020/7.025 and 14.038/14.052 plus/minus. It was operational during World war 2.

The Tableland Radio Group will be operating from Rocky Creek War Memorial Park,
near Atherton, with the Callsign VK4GHL.

The Townsville Amateur radio Club will be operating from Jezzine Barracks using
the callsign AX4WIT. It will be a special event as there is a parade taking place
and it will have guests from the Army, Navy and Air Force visiting their station.

Johnno VK3FMPB will be operating from Ballarat Football Grounds which was an AIF
staging base during the war. Johnno has spent several years setting up at various
locations on Anzac Day.

Another special opportunity will be Maurie VK2DCD at Coleambally ,Riverina,
who will be using a World war 2 SOE "suit case radio" on CW on 7.025 - 7.040
plus/minus.  These sets only put out a couple of watts but Maurie has recently
had it on air and been getting some good contacts.

At Trumby Bay RSL Hall in South Australia will be Alan VK5PBZ. Alan has built a
good relationship with the RSL community over the past years and is accepted as
he has told the story of the event.
Alan will be operational from 1000UTC on 7.040MHz CW, 7.290MHz AM,
14.040MHz CW, 14.060MHz CW, 14.286MHz AM with primary frequency 7.040MHz .

At Lake Boga, near Swan Hill, the former World War 2 sea plane secret repair base
will have both the Sunraysia amateur Radio Club and Amateur Radio Victoria
using the callsign  VI3ANZAC and using the freqs 7.010 and 7.095 and 14.010/14.095,
21.095 +/- QRM

The Amateurs from Ingham, in North Queensland, will be operating from the
Ingham RSL and will be operating on a range of frequencies on the callsign AX4MS.

More stations will be also operating and switching to the old modes during the day.
Discussions with RSL have indicated that they are very happy to have another unique
activity in operation during Anzac Day. Defence staff have also been infomred and
they are amazed that the RadioAmateurs are doing it.

Many Amateurs joined our Defence forces and took their skills into their service
lives in a wide range of activities such as Coastwatchers, Air force Radio operators,
Radar operators and repair, navy radio operators and Army operations.

The Townsville Amateur Radio Club Inc. will be working in with the Events and Protocol Unit

HF, VHF and UHF station from the Brigadier North Park Upper section of Jezzine Barracks for
the entire duration of the ANZAC 100 commemoration on 25th April 2015.

Assembling the station will happen during Friday 24th April from 11am with assistance of
TARCadians plus some material support from the Australian Army.
During the operation of AX4WIT guests from the Army, Navy and Air Force will witness
the use of CW and AM and might even have a go themselves.
The station will be ideally located for cheering on participants in the ANZAC 100 march
and the two outdoor big screens will be clearly visible from the station for the live
broadcast of events from Gallipoli and Villers Bretonneaux.

- VI4AE2 - Royal Australian Navy Submarine AE2 Commemorative Station
AS PART OF THE ANZAC CENTENARY COMMEMORATION
On April 25th 2015, the Special Event Station VI4AE2 will go to air for the period
of just five days to commemorate the gallant Officers and Sailors of the
Royal Australian Navy Submarine HMAS AE2. This was the only Australian Naval Vessel
stationed at the Dardanelles to be involved in the Gallipoli campaign.

HMAS AE2 successfully breached the defences of the Dardanelles to break into the
Sea of Marmara. Her brave Officers and Sailors survived this arduous journey after
shelling from the Turkish shore batteries, running aground under their guns,
and narrowly surviving the submarine nets and deadly minefields that threatened
oblivion at every moment.

Upon surviving this treacherous voyage and reaching the Sea of Marmara, HMAS AE2
rose to the surface to send off a message to alert command of her strategic position.
This signal sent by Telegrapher William Falconer using the Submarine’s Marconi Type 10
Spark transmitter changed the course of Australian Military history. It is believed
to have influenced the decision of General Sir Ian Hamilton, which saw the ANZACs
stay and fight at Gallipoli for the next 8 months.

Six operators will variously put VI4AE2 to air over the five days from April 25th
through to April 30th in honour of the five days the HMAS AE2 followed its orders to
“RUN AMOK IN THE SEA OF MARMARA”.
A very informative webpage has been set up at QRZ.com, search for VI4AE2 for details
of Operators and operating times and frequencies.

The Amateur Radio Operators of this special event call sign are as follows,

Mike Charteris VK4QS    Ex Royal Australian Navy
Mike Paterson VK4MIK    Ex Royal Australian Navy
Doc Wescombe-Down VK5BUG    Ex Royal Australian Navy
Alan Shannon VK4SN    Ex Royal Australian Air Force
Peter Hewitson VK4QC    Ex Maritime Coast Radio Operator
Bob Beck VK4RJ    Ex P29, Rabaul Plantation Manager

We all look forward to working you in honour of the Crew of the HMAS AE2

News from Far North Queensland
- Mikes Morse Mania Display
Do you really appreciate really well preserved radio equipment ?
Mike/VK4MIK certainly does and currently has one of the most extensive collections
of morse keys and heritage equipment in the country. He regularly arranges
public displays of his collection - although due to logisitcs reasons he can only
display part of the collection at any one time.
The next Mikes Morse Mania display will be happening at the Cardwell Telegraph Museum
on Friday 29th and Saturday 30th May, and with such an extensive special display
Museum volunteers will be extending the opening hours to let as many people as
possible view 60 plus exquisitely restored morse keys and other heritage radio gear.
Mike and his many helpers from the Tablelands Radio Group, plus the volunteers from
the Cardwell Telegraph Museum hope you can drop in and see the display.
Make sure you say gerday to Mike and the Museum volunteers!

- TRG get Cooktown morsing
On the 12th and 13th of June members of the Tableland Radio Group will be putting
on a display of morse equipment and World War 2 military radios at the
Cooktown Historical Society in Cooktown. The display should be well noticed,
as it will be staged in the main street.
The Historical Society building has a link to morse - it is the original
telegraph Office which was built around 1876 when a Telegraph Line was run through
to Maytown and Palmerville. This linked up with a telegraph line which headed north
from Junction Creek Telegraph Station, near the present Mt Surprise, to
Tate Telegraph Station thence Walsh Telegraph Station, near Wrotham Park,
and thence to Palmerville.
For some months a section from Walsh to Palmerville was operated by a pony express
carrying the telegraph messages to be re transmitted each way.
This linked in Cooktown, then the 2nd biggest city in Queensland, to the rest of the world.
Once the Cooktown to Laura railway was built the telegraph line was routed alongside
same using Oppenheimer poles.
In 1913 the Cooktown Coast Radio Station VIC on Grassy Hill was connected by a telegraph
line to the Cooktown Telegraph Office. Later Archer Point Lighthouse was also connected
to Cooktown telegraph Office - similar to Cape Cleveland lighthouse and Cape Bowling Green
Light were to Townsville Telegraph Station.
With all this communications history about the district the Cooktown RSL have expressed
interest in the display and have already asked some questions regarding the Coast-watchers
and Victor India Charlie. This may result in a talk about it being given at night.
The Tablelands Radio Group have started building up a museum at VIC and the up coming
display, encouraged by a member of the Cooktown Historical Society, along with the
groups annual visits to Grassy Hill Light for the International Lighthouse Lightship
Weekend will be sure to get interest about the district increased to ensure
further preservation of the communications history of the Cape.
If you are in Cooktown during the weekend of 12th and 13th June please be sure
to make a stop at the Historical Society and say hi
de Mike VK4MIK
