News from the ANZAC Front
- AM and CW on air event on ANZAC Day
On ANZAC Day, 25th of April 2012, a group of Amateurs in North Queensland,
Tableland Radio Group, are encouraging amateurs to operate on AM and CW
modes during the afternoon and evening of ANZAC Day as a mark of remembrance
to the servicemen and women who served our countries during time of conflict.
AM and CW were modes used by radio operators and signallers during WW2 and
in Korea, Malaysian and early in Viet Nam so, by using those modes, it shows
that we Radio Amateurs are remembering them in our own special manner.
Hopefully our New Zealand cousins will join in the activity as the ANZAC
spirit is an integral part of both our countries.
This is NOT a contest and we simply ask Amateurs to switch to AM and CW to
experience the attributes of those old modes.
As regards frequencies its simply staying on the usual net frequencies BUT
change the mode.
If it's possible we ask that ex-Navy Ships, Military Museums, fortifications,
Warbirds,Radio museums etc etc be used to operate from.
On conclusion please send an article to Amateur Radio Magazine to show
others what you have done.
Mike Patterson VK4MIK - vk4mike [at] yahoo.com.au
North Queensland Radio Amateurs will be involved with this event in
several ways, all starting from 0300UTC,
The Townsville Amateur Radio Club Inc. will again be operating
Club Station AX4WIT on AM and CW in the Club Rooms at West End
- situated in a fortified World War 2 RAAF Communications Centre.
Some members of theTARCinc, led by Mal VK4MSS, will activate
a number of World War 2 fortifications in Charters Towers
- primarily on Towers Hill.
Participants in the Friendly Afternoon Net on 7115kHz from 0600UTC
will be using using Amplitude Modulation, with net control for
the Friendly Afternoon Net from Towers Hill.
During the Friendly Afternoon Net, a message will be released
from Townsville, relayed by participants as accurately as possible
through to Charters Towers and then to the Atherton Tablelands.
This activity to simulate message handling on AM, including the
noise, distortion and fading experienced by message handlers of old.

Transit of Venus - 6 June 2012
A transit of Venus occurs when Venus is observed from Earth to move across
the face of the Sun. The first transit since 1882 occurred on 8 June 2004.
Transits of Venus currently occur in the following pattern of time:
8 years, 121.5 years, 8 years, 105.5 years, 8 years, 121.5 years, 8 years, 105.5 years, etc.
Transits of Venus are historically important events. They are especially important for Australia
as James Cooks main reason for undertaking the voyage on which he charted Australias east coast
was to observe the 1769 transit from the island of Tahiti. By observing a transit, astronomers
could for the first time calculate the distance from the Earth to the Sun with some accuracy.
If you miss the 2012 transit of Venus, you’ll have to wait until December 2117 and December 2125
for the next transits.
Eastern Australia and most of New Zealand will provide good locations from which to view the
transit, as it will be visible from there from beginning to end.
West Australians will miss the start of the transit as the transit will already be in progress
there at sunrise. For some places on the east coast of New Zealand the Sun will set just
before Venus moves off the Sun.
On 6 June 2012 and if the sky is clear the transit will be visible at the following times
1st contact, as Venus just touches the Sun
2nd contact, with Venus just inside the Sun
3rd contact, with Venus about to exit the Sun
4th contact, when Venus last touches the Sun
