News from the ANZAC Front
- AM and CW on ANZAC 100 - Radioamateurs Remember.
The traditional AM & CW event organised by Mike "Banjo" Patterson VK4MIK
and  the Tablelands Radio Club of Far North Queensland, will again
take to the air for the 5th year. This is not a contest.
It honours those modes used by service personnel in earlier wars. The event
idea came from a telephone conversation between Mike "Banjo" Patterson VK4MIK
and World War 11 Coastwatcher in Papua New Guinea, Lionel Veale.
He set up his ATR4A HF radio and orientated the antenna from behind enemy
lines. Lionel was one of those brave Coastwatchers who sent back vital information.
The concept developed by the Tableland Radio Group in Far North Queensland
basically asks us to consider changing modes on ANZAC Day nets, as an honour
and Amateur Radio salute to those who served or are serving.

The annual event involves ex-military sites and related museums. It includes
the AM Narly Net on 3.600 MHz at 0630 local and then the same mode appears
at 7.115 MHz during the afternoon in Northern Queensland.

Ex HMAS Diamintina will be operating as VK4RAN on the afternoon on CW on
7.020/7.025 and 14.038/14.052 plus/minus. It was operational during World war 2.

The Tableland Radio Group will be operating from Rocky Creek War Memorial Park,
near Atherton, with the Callsign VK4GHL.

The Townsville Amateur radio Club will be operating from Jezzine Barracks using
the callsign AX4WIT. It will be a special event as there is a parade taking place
and it will have guests from the Army, Navy and Air Force visiting their station.

David VK4MDX hopes to operate somewhere in the Thuringowa region either around
Riverway or Dan Gleeson Park using vintage radio equipment on AM and CW only.

Johnno VK3FMPB will be operating from Ballarat Football Grounds which was an AIF
staging base during the war. Johnno has spent several years setting up at various
locations on Anzac Day.

Another special opportunity will be Maurie VK2DCD at Coleambally ,Riverina,
who will be using a World war 2 SOE "suit case radio" on CW on 7.025 - 7.040
plus/minus.  These sets only put out a couple of watts but maurie has recently
had it on air and been getting some good contacts.

At Trumby Bay RSL Hall in South Australia will be Alan VK5PBZ. Alan has built a
good relationship with the RSL community over the past years and is accepted as
he has told the story of the event.
Alan will be operational from 1000UTC on 7.040MHz CW, 7.290MHz AM,
14.040MHz CW, 14.060MHz CW, 14.286MHz AM with primary frequency 7.040MHz .

At Lake Boga, near Swan Hill, the former World War 2 sea plane secret repair base
will have both the Sunraysia amateur Radio Club and Amateur Radio Victoria
using the callsign  VI3ANZAC and using the freqs 7.010 and 7.095 and 14.010/14.095,
21.095 +/- QRM

The Amateurs from Ingham, in North Queensland, will be operating from the
Ingham RSL and will be operating on a range of frequencies on the callsign AX4MS.

More stations will be also operating and switching to the old modes during the day.
Discussions with RSL have indicated that they are very happy to have another unique
activity in operation during Anzac Day. Defence staff have also been infomred and
they are amazed that the RadioAmateurs are doing it.

Many Amateurs joined our Defence forces and took their skills into their service
lives in a wide range of activities such as Coastwatchers, Air force Radio operators,
Radar operators and repair, navy radio operators and Army operations.

Ingham North Queensland
Shorty/VK4FABT is co-ordinator for operations of AX4MS from the Herbert River RSL Club
for AM and CW on ANZAC Day. Operators involved include Mario/VK4MS, Shorty/VK4FABT, Clyde/VK4FCRH.
Jeff/VK4AJH, Mark/VK4FMAR, Rob/VK4ARQ plus others.
The operation is planned to happen on 25th April from dawn to dusk on 80, 40 and possibly 20metres
using Amplitude Modulation for most of the day and possibly some CW during proceedings.
The local press is already onboard with some of the operators involved with a photo opportunity
for the Herber River Express to publicise the event.
Want to help out with AX4MS ? Contact Shorty/VK4FABT via the wireless on the nets.

---
Townsville North Queensland
The Townsville Amateur Radio Club Inc. will be working in with the Events and Protocol Unit
of the Townsville City Council to assemble and operate a solar powered portable
HF, VHF and UHF station from the Brigadier North Park Upper section of Jezzine Barracks for
the entire duration of the ANZAC 100 commemoration on 25th April 2015.
Assembling the station will happen during Friday afternoon 24th April with assistance of
TARCadians plus some material support from the Australian Army.
During the operation of AX4WIT guests from the Army, Navy and Air Force will witness
the use of CW and AM and might even have a go themselves.
The station will be ideally located for cheering on participants in the ANZAC 100 march
and the two outdoor big screens will be clearly visible from the station for the live
broadcast of events from Gallipoli and Villers Bretonneaux.
Want to Contact AX4WIT at Jezzine Barracks ? Try 3600kHz (including the Gnarly Net),
7116kHz when not on 80m and listen out on the CW and AM parts of 20metres just in case!
Want to help out with the staging and operating of AX4WIT ?
Contact theTARCinc ANZAC 100 co-ordinator John/VK4FNQT via the wireless on nets and DX openings.

- VI4ANZAC - Lest We Forget - happening in the Townsville Region
The special event commemorative callsign VK4ANZAC will be active from the
garrison city of Townsville from Saturday May 2nd to Saturday May 9th
in memory of all who served our nations in a time of great need.
During the weekends of the activation in Townsville, radio operations
of VI4ANZAC will take place from the clubrooms of The Townsville Amateur Radio
Club Inc. - which in World War 2 were the Pacific theatre communications
headquarters for the Royal Australian Air Force.
During the week of the Townsville activation of VI4ANZAC radioamateurs in
the region, operating on a rostered basis, will transmit from home stations built
on what used to be one of the largest air bases in the Pacific theatre of operations
during World War 2 and adjacent to one of the largest Army bases in Australia today.
It is planned during activations to utilise CW, SSB and the digital modes
on or near the recommended VIxANZAC monitoring frequencies.

VI4ANZAC has been booked for the Townsville activation to happen from
Saturday 2nd May 0001UTC until Friday 8th May 2359UTC.
That translates in local time from 10am Saturday 2nd May to 10am Saturday 9th May.
Eldon/VK4FNQA is in charge of roster and radio log co-ordination whilst
Gavin/VK4ZZ is the event co-ordinator and final log checker and uploader.

Anyone keen to activate their station in the Townsville region with
special event call VI4ANZAC need to contact Eldon/VK4FNQA by phone
on 07-47554510 or on the wireless.
Remember too that as the special event call is an Advanced Call,
if you are a Foundation or Standard call then you will need and
Advanced Call to be with you during your use of VI4ANZAC.
