News of a Silent Key
- Evelyn Bahr (ex VK4EQ)
It is my sad news to report that we have lost another ham.
Evelyn Bahr, ex VK4EQ, first YL to be licenced in North Queensland (1960)
went Silent Key 12-30am 13th May 2015 (2015-03-12-1430UTC) in Townsville.
Evie, aged 85 years, was a former President, Back-scatter editor and Life Member
of The Townsville Amateur Radio Club Inc. and also started the
North Queensland Net which still runs today.
Evie was also very active with the QCWA in North Queensland.
Please reflect on the great loss of one of the original pioneer ladies
of Amateur Radio in Queensland.
Evelyn's funeral will be held at Morleys Chapel, The Lakes, Townsville
from 1pm on Friday 22nd May 2015. (2015-05-22-0300UTC)
All who can make it please attend and send off Evie the way she would
have wanted us to do.
At Evie's request, there will be no cortege.
At the family's request, the theme will be Lilac and Lavender, Evie's favourites.
Vale Evelyn Bahr, ex VK4EQ, Silent Key.

News from Far North Queensland
- Mikes Morse Mania Display
Do you really appreciate really well preserved radio equipment ?
Mike/VK4MIK certainly does and currently has one of the most extensive collections
of morse keys and heritage equipment in the country. He regularly arranges
public displays of his collection - although due to logisitcs reasons he can only
display part of the collection at any one time.
The next Mikes Morse Mania display will be happening at the Cardwell Telegraph Museum
on Friday 29th and Saturday 30th May, and with such an extensive special display
Museum volunteers will be extending the opening hours to let as many people as
possible view 60 plus exquisitely restored morse keys and other heritage radio gear.
Mike and his many helpers from the Tablelands Radio Group, plus the volunteers from
the Cardwell Telegraph Museum hope you can drop in and see the display.
Make sure you say gerday to Mike and the Museum volunteers!

- TRG get Cooktown morsing
On the 12th and 13th of June members of the Tableland Radio Group will be putting
on a display of morse equipment and World War 2 military radios at the
Cooktown Historical Society in Cooktown. The display should be well noticed,
as it will be staged in the main street.
The Historical Society building has a link to morse - it is the original
telegraph Office which was built around 1876 when a Telegraph Line was run through
to Maytown and Palmerville. This linked up with a telegraph line which headed north
from Junction Creek Telegraph Station, near the present Mt Surprise, to
Tate Telegraph Station thence Walsh Telegraph Station, near Wrotham Park,
and thence to Palmerville.
For some months a section from Walsh to Palmerville was operated by a pony express
carrying the telegraph messages to be re transmitted each way.
This linked in Cooktown, then the 2nd biggest city in Queensland, to the rest of the world.
Once the Cooktown to Laura railway was built the telegraph line was routed alongside
same using Oppenheimer poles.
In 1913 the Cooktown Coast Radio Station VIC on Grassy Hill was connected by a telegraph
line to the Cooktown Telegraph Office. Later Archer Point Lighthouse was also connected
to Cooktown telegraph Office - similar to Cape Cleveland lighthouse and Cape Bowling Green
Light were to Townsville Telegraph Station.
With all this communications history about the district the Cooktown RSL have expressed
interest in the display and have already asked some questions regarding the Coast-watchers
and Victor India Charlie. This may result in a talk about it being given at night.
The Tablelands Radio Group have started building up a museum at VIC and the up coming
display, encouraged by a member of the Cooktown Historical Society, along with the
groups annual visits to Grassy Hill Light for the International Lighthouse Lightship
Weekend will be sure to get interest about the district increased to ensure
further preservation of the communications history of the Cape.
If you are in Cooktown during the weekend of 12th and 13th June please be sure
to make a stop at the Historical Society and say hi
de Mike VK4MIK

News from Central Queensland

- Theresa Creek Campout
The Central Highlands Amateur Radio Club is holding the
Theresa Creek Campout near Clermont QLD from Friday afternoon June 5th
to Monday afternoon June 8th at the Theresa Creek Dam Camping and
Water Sports Facility.
The camping facilities are 22km by road southwest of the Clermont CBD
and can host Caravans, Mobile Homes, Tents and Swags.
Pets are welcome,  there are Hot showers onsite, plus Toilets,
a small but mighty Kiosk and BBQ's. Note that there is no EFTPOS available,
however since you are travelling in the country you should be carrying cash anyway !
It only costs $15 for two per site per night, and you can call Pete or Kim on
07 49832327 during the day for more info.
Don't try to book though - staying there is on a first come, first served basis.
Note that kiddies under 18 still attending school get to stay for free.

To get there -
Head southwest out of Clermont through Copperfield onto the Peakvale Road.
At approx 13km from the Clermont Showgrounds there is a turnoff to the left from the
Peakvale Road that runs for a further 6km to the Theresa Creek Dam Camping Grounds.

What to take -
BYO everything, including drinking water as there is limited tank supply at the Grounds.
The kiosk where you pay your $15 per site per night camping fee does stock essential items
and souvenirs.

What is there to do -
Well, apart from mixing with other hams and support crews and doing radio things
out in a nice family camping environment there is also Camp fires, Boating, swimming,
Fishing, Skiing, potting the ellusive but succulent Red Claw plus lots lots more !
The Central Highlands crew normally camp opposite the toilet block when you enter the park.

To find out more about the activity and about the Central Highlands Amateur Radio Club Inc
get in touch with Secretary Helen Wood on mobile 0412038033 or on the club email address

- Central Highlands ARC AGM Weekend
The famous and popular Central Highlands Amateur Radio
Club AGM weekend at Camp Fairbairn, approx 20km south of Emerald, is on
from 4pm Friday 25th to Midday Sunday 27th September 2015.
Caravaners please book into Lake Maraboon Holiday Village, as soon as possible.
Sleeping on site in the dorms ? Get your numbers in as soon as possible.
CHARC Secretary Helen needs to know from you if you are attending,
so she and Steve/VK4SM can plan catering for the acclaimed Saturday Night
Gastronomic Feed Up, arrange the troops to get enough chairs and treasure
together for the coveted AGM Monster Auction, divvy up the available beds
in the on site dormitory and ensure there is enough grub for the Sunday Recovery
Breakfast and Saturday Sausage Sizzle.
It will be a good idea to bring your own linen and cutlery !
All you need to do is lift a digit or two and let Helen know that you will be there.
Do not wait until the last minute as you might miss out on overnight accommodation.
Latest date for numbers is Friday 11th September.
Got questions ? Want to get your numbers in ?
Contact Helen and Steve either via email [qrm] vk4wch [at] wia [dot] org [dot] au
